Jamaica, N.Y. - The St. John's University women's tennis closed out the 2004 spring season in dominant fashion, beating BIG EAST rival Providence 5-0, before the match was called due to the rain. The Red Storm finish the regular season at 12-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
After dropping three matches, the Red Storm bounced back and closed out the season with two-straight wins over BIG EAST foes Connecticut and Providence.
"We've been on a roll recently and ended the season with a strong finish," said Head Coach Gemma Alexander-Mozeak. "We're well rested and our momentum is back on an upswing right now."
The Red Storm, who have been solid in doubles all season, continued the trend, sweeping all three matches for the first point. The No. 1 pair of Hande Gorur and Lauren Leo won 8-4 against Sara Bigelli and Cheri Lapane, before Lauren Lorenzetti and Allison Davidson beat Nicole Rodgers and Molly Gilbride 8-3 at No. 2. Kristina Bothova and Jennifer Liantonio closed out the doubles action with an 8-3 take at No. 3.
Gorur and Lorenzetti controlled their opponents in singles without dropping a game; as Gorur won at No. 1 and Lorenzetti put St. John's up 3-0 with her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. The decisive point in the match was won by Jennifer Liantonio, who beat Andrea Lee 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6, leading the Red Storm to the win.
"Jennifer (St. John's President's Society member) is a perfect example of our team's success on and off the court the season, " said Mozeak of Liantonio. "Due to her success in her academics, today was her last home match with St. John's, and she went out and claimed the deciding point at the No. 6 spot in a huge win for us today."
Leo added a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Gilbride at the No. 4 spot, giving St. John's a 5-0 advantage before the match was called due to rain.
