QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head men's lacrosse coach Rick Sowell announced the Red Storm's inaugural schedule for the Spring of 2005 today.
"I am very excited to have our 2005 schedule complete," said Sowell. "I look forward to the challenge in competing against some of the best lacrosse programs in the country."
St. John's will open their season with a game against Robert Morris, another first-year program, on February 27 at the Haverford School in Pennsylvania. "The Robert Morris game will be special," said Sowell. "It's not often that two new programs get a chance to face each other in their inaugural game."
The Red Storm will then travel to play Fairfield University on March 2. Fairfield, currently a member of the Great Western Lacrosse League, will join St. John's in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) in 2006.
On March 5, St. John's will make their home and ECAC debut at DaSilva Memorial Field, when they face Georgetown. The Hoyas, a two-time ECAC defending champion and 2004 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist, will return Tewaarton Award finalist Brodie Merrill in 2005. This will also be the second meeting between Coach Sowell and his former mentor, Georgetown Head Coach Dave Urick.
"It's a thrill to compete against the school where I began coaching at this level. I have great respect for the University and Coach Urick," said Sowell.
On Saturday, March 12, St. John's will face Drexel in Philadelphia, Pa. and then will return home to face Hartford on March 16.
SJU will then travel to Baltimore, Md. on March 19 to match up with another first-year ECAC team, Loyola College (Md.). Loyola returns all but one senior who scored points on offense last season for the Greyhounds.
The Red Storm will next host three games in a row, against Air Force (March 26), 2004 NCAA Tournament participant Rutgers (March 30) and Lafayette (April 2).
On April 9, St. John's will travel to Amherst, Mass., to face ECAC opponent UMass, then will match up with Penn State, who will return their seven top scorers in State College, Pa.
Coached by former Georgetown assistant Matt Kerwick, Hobart College will travel to DaSilva Memorial Field on April 23 for the ECAC regular season finale. Hobart, another 2004 NCAA Tournament participant, will also be in their first-year of ECAC competition.
The Red Storm will close out the season on April 30, when they will travel to the University of Delaware in a non-conference match-up.
