Queens, NY - St. John's junior Craig Hansen (Glen Cove, NY) is one of several Red Storm baseball players who were selected to participate in summer league All-Star games, highlighting a strong off-season for several student-athletes.
Hansen, pitching for the Harwich (MA) Mariners of the famed Cape Cod Baseball League, was one of five players from his team selected to participate in the midseason classic, which will be held on Saturday, July 24 in Orleans.
The Mariners, who are 13-15 overall, have been led by a pair of Red Storm right-handers. Hansen was selected to the all-star team as a result of a dominant season so far, as he carries a 1-1 record and is tied for the lead league in saves with seven. In 14 appearances, he has thrown 14.2 innings, given up two unearned runs on six hits, while walking only two batters and striking out 25.
Another Red Storm pitcher, junior Anthony Varvaro (Staten Island, NY), is 3-2 with a 2.72 earned run average. Varvaro, who is second on the team in wins, has given up 11 earned runs on 23 hits in 36.1 innings pitched, with 16 walks and 40 strikeouts.
In the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game, held on Monday at The Ballpark at St. John's, sophomore pitcher Justin Muir (Plainsboro, NJ), was one of nine pitchers for the Kaiser Division who combined to throw a no-hitter against the Wolff Division in a 3-1 win. Muir, a standout reliever for the Red Storm during their 2004 NCAA Tournament run, threw a perfect inning in the impressive win. The game was tied at 1-all in the seventh inning, when St. John's junior Ken Devenney (Philadelphia, PA) hit a single and scored what proved to be the decisive run on a triple from East Tennessee State's Caleb Moore.
St. John's senior P.J. Antoniato (Levittown, NY) will play on Saturday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League's All-Star Game in Montpelier, Vermont. Antoniato is batting .315 for the Manchester (Conn.) Silkworms.
Another Red Storm player, junior Greg Thomson (Levittown, NY) played in the Northwoods League All-Star Game last week. Thomson, who is playing for the Madison (WI) Mallards, is batting .321 and is second on his team with 20 stolen bases.
