Blankmeyer Named Northeast Region Coach of the Year

Queens, NY - St. John's University Head Baseball Coach Ed Blankmeyer was named Co-Northeast Region Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association, it was announced today. Blankmeyer shared the award with Charlie Hickey of Central Connecticut State University. They were among a group of nine coaches nationally to earn regional coaching honors. During the 2004 season, Blankmeyer led St. John's to a 37-21 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Red Storm, picked to finish seventh in the league overall, went 17-9 in the BIG EAST to finish as the league runner-up. The team took two of three games at then No. 24 Lamar, split a doubleheader with then No. 9 Notre Dame and won all but one conference series during the season. Three student-athletes earned all-conference honors and the team was ranked as high as No. 34 in the country by the National College Baseball Writers Association. After making the conference tournament, the Red Storm were an at-large selection for the NCAA Tournament, where they played in a regional at Stanford. After a 4-3 loss to Long Beach State in the first round, the team beat UNLV, 9-7, and then were eliminated by the host Cardinal. Blankmeyer will be entering his 10th season at St. John's this year. He has a career record of 276-189-3 at St. John's and has had four 30-win seasons during his career. In 1996, his first season with the Red Storm, Blankmeyer went 26-18 and was named the League's Coach of the Year.
