Queens, NY - The St. John's women's soccer team continued their streak today, beating Wagner 2-0 for the 2004 St. John's University Women's Soccer NYC Nike Classic title. The Red Storm improve to 6-0 on the season. Red Storm defender Andrea Coukoulis was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player in a ceremony following the game.
The Red Storm's game-winner came at the 23:44 mark when Betty Ann Rogers knocked in an own goal on an attempt to clear the ball. St. John's Erin Bohn sent a cross to the middle of the goal mouth towards Jane Vongvorachoti, who got a foot on the ball, but deflected it to Rogers.
The Red Storm continued to dominate on offense, nearly scoring on several other occasions. Erin Henderson had back-to-back opportunities in the first half, the first on a left footed shot that hit the crossbar and the second was saved by Ashley Wilson in goal for Wagner.
The Red Storm added to the lead when Susan Byrne, in her first appearance with the Red Storm, tallied the first goal of her career. After a corner kick attempt was cleared, Vongvorachoti chipped the ball back into the mix, where Byrne, with her back to the goal, headed it into the left side for the 2-0 advantage.
Two minutes later, Byrne had another look off of a corner kick by Erin Henderson, but Byrne was called for a foul on the Seahawks' keeper.
Wagner pressed on offense late in the second half, but could not connect. With 23 minutes remaining in the half, Jacqueline Santariello's shot was saved by Jaime Beran, who was making her debut in goal for the Red Storm.
Beran was credited with the shutout and finished with four saves on the afternoon.
In game one, Columbia picked up their second win of the tournament, beating Long Island 1-0. The Lions controlled the offense for most of the game and had several chances in the first half. In the 32nd minute, Columbia scored a goal that was called back after an offsides whistle.
Columbia attacked early in the second half, tallying the game-winner just 19 seconds into action. Shannon Munoz took a pass that was set up by Meghan Hurlbut and Lucie Kroening, and hit a shot that sailed past the keeper and caught the lower right corner of the net.
The Lions, who were 2-0 for the weekend, finished behind St. John's in the four-team tournament, falling to the Red Storm in a tie-breaking procedure. Wagner and LIU finished tied for third.
Joining Coukoulis on the All-Tournament team from St. John's were Erin Henderson, Erinn Flaherty and Kati Schantz. From Columbia were Shannon Munoz, Cathleen Cimino and Lauren Nussbaum. Wagner's Betty Ann Rogers and Danielle Telleria and LIU's Nichole Lopez and Ashley O'Connor rounded out the All-Tournament team.
St. John's will return to action on Friday when they kick off the 2004 BIG EAST season at Syracuse. Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
