Schuler and Burt both net first career goals to lead the Red Storm in a road victory
BALTIMORE – St. John's women's soccer handed UMBC its first loss of the season with a commanding 2-0 shutout on Thursday afternoon.
Daisy Burt and Carly Schuler each netted their first collegiate goals to lift St. John's (2-2-1) past UMBC (3-1-1). The Red Storm turned in its most productive offensive performance of the season, firing a season-high 18 shots, including 12 in the second half, while limiting the Retrievers to eight strike attempts. The victory extended the Johnnies unbeaten streak to three matches and marked their second consecutive shutout.
Janelle Sylvestre registered her first point of the season and third career assist on Schuler's opening tally. Sia Bharadwaj continued to make an impact in her first season in Queens, setting up Burt's goal for her second assist in the last three contests. Bharadwaj is now tied with Snæfríður Eva Eiríksdóttir for the team lead with two helpers.
Graduate student goalkeeper Kayla Bower earned her second straight clean sheet, turning aside both shots she faced to improve to 2-2-1 on the season. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native has played every minute in goal through the first five matches and owns a 1.00 goals-against average, a .783 save percentage and 18 saves.
The two sides were locked in a defensive battle throughout the opening 45 minutes, with St. John's holding a 6-3 advantage in shots and Bower turning aside both attempts she faced to send the match into halftime scoreless.
The Red Storm broke through just over four minutes into the second half. Nora Basile spun her way out of a double team before delivering a cross to Sylvestre at the top of the box. Sylvestre made a move past the defender and sent a ball toward the bottom-right corner of the goal, where Schuler redirected it into the back of the net to give the Johnnies a 1-0 advantage.
St. John's doubled its lead in the 71st minute when Bharadwaj slipped a through ball to Burt at the top of the box. The sophomore buried a left-footed strike from 18 yards out to make it 2-0. The Johnnies continued to apply pressure down the stretch, recording four shots and a corner kick over the final 10 minutes before closing out the shutout victory.
The Red Storm will close out a three-game road trip at Monmouth with a 2 p.m. contest at Hesse Field on Sept. 3.
