St. John’s to Close Out Road Swing at Monmouth

The Red Storm ride a three-game unbeaten streak into Thursday’s contest with the Hawks
QUEENS, N.Y. – After an undefeated week, the St. John's women's soccer team will return to action to close out a three-game road trip at Monmouth on Thursday afternoon.
Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at Hesse Field in West Long Branch, N.J. Fans can tune into the contest on FloSports.
St. John's (2-2-1) extended its unbeaten streak to three matches with a 2-0 road victory over UMBC, handing the Retrievers their first loss of the season. The Red Storm turned in its strongest offensive showing of the year recording a season-high 18 shots, including 12 after halftime. Defensively, the Johnnies registered their second consecutive clean sheet.
Carly Schuler and Daisy Burt tallied the goals, marking the first of their collegiate careers in during the victory in Baltimore on Thursday. Schuler broke the scoreless tie early in the second half off a feed from Janelle Sylvestre, who recorded her first point of the season. Burt doubled the advantage in the 71st minute, finishing a through ball from Sia Bharadwaj, while Lauren Spence also earned an assist for the first point of her career. Bharadwaj collected her second helper in three matches and moved into a tie for the team lead in that category.
Goalkeeper Kayla Bower anchored the Johnnies defensively, making two saves to record her second straight shutout and improve to 2-2-1 on the year. Bower has played all 450 minutes between the pipes this season, ranking first in the BIG EAST and tied for the national lead in minutes played. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native also leads the conference and sits 63rd nationally with 18 saves. Through five matches, Bower is averaging 3.60 saves per game with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .783 save percentage.
Following the victory, Spence earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time in her career. The junior contributed on both ends of the pitch against UMBC, recording her first collegiate point with an assist on Burt's goal, while helping the Red Storm backline secure its second consecutive clean sheet. Spence became the third Johnnie to earn a conference weekly honor this season, joining Bower and Telma Steindórsdóttir.
St. John's and Monmouth will face off for the 16th time, with the series dating back to 1988. The Hawks hold a slight 8-5-2 edge all-time against the Red Storm. The two teams met last season with Monmouth outlasting the Johnnies in a 2-0 shutout in West Long Branch, N.J.
The Hawks are coming off a 10-6-2 campaign in 2025, finishing atop the CAA North Division standings. Monmouth was selected second in the 2026 CAA North Division Preseason Poll and placed Chloe Messer and Grace Notarfancesco on the Preseason All-CAA Team, along with two honorable mention selections. The Hawks return 18 players from last season's squad while welcoming 10 newcomers.
Monmouth has carried that momentum into the 2026 campaign, opening the year with a 2-1-2 mark. The Hawks also ride a three-game unbeaten streak into Thursday's contest.
Ashley Lavrich and Saar van der Boom were recognized by the CAA for their performances during the week. Lavrich earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after registering three goals and an assist, while van der Boom was named Rookie of the Week after recording the first three points of her collegiate career with a goal and an assist.
Following Thursday's contest, the Red Storm will return home to face Central Connecticut at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9.
