Queens, NY - St. John's University Men's Lacrosse Coach Rick Sowell announced today the hiring of Dan Chemotti (pronounced Sha-mott-ee) to complete his staff for the upcoming spring campaign.
Chemotti, a former assistant at Dartmouth. reunites with Sowell who has tabbed him to run the Red Storm offense in 2005.
Chris Fiore, offensive assistant and goalie coach, will team with Chemotti to engineer the St. John's attack along with volunteer assistant Terrance Gilroy, who will assist Sowell with the defensive strategy.
"We have put the finishing touches on a staff that has a tremendous background in lacrosse and is well respected in the sport," Sowell said. "They all have unique qualities that will be a plus for our team to provide leadership, motivation and a regimented work ethic in our first year together. It's the best staff I've had in my six years as a head coach."
A 2002 graduate of Duke University, Chemotti was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer and team captain for the Blue Devils. He currently is playing professionally in the Major League Lacrosse circuit as a member of the New Jersey Pride. Chemotti honed his skills in high school at the fabled West Genesee High School in Syracuse, New York, known for its prestige as a perennial state champion.

Fiore (currently playing professionally with the Boston Cannons) is a local product from Freeport, NY, who became an All-American for the Minuteman and can relate to the current New York players who are beginning their collegiate careers at St. John's.
"Coming out of high school, Chris was in a similar situation as our freshman," Sowell added. "He was a good athlete who blossomed in college. He knows what it takes to be successful and he will have a significant impact on the players and their individual development."
Gilroy has a specific tie to St. John's from his father Tom, who coached football in the Red Storm program from 1970-1981. He was a standout for the United States Military Academy from 1995-97 and was an Academic All-American and Dean's List member during his tenure at West Point.
"Terry's West Point experience is also a key. He will relate well with the younger players who can flourish with his experience and know-how," Sowell concluded.
