QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's head lacrosse coach Rick Sowell has announced the promotion of Terry Gilroy from a volunteer assistant coach to a full-time assistant coach. Gilroy replaces Chris Fiore, who left coaching to pursue a career in sales.
"With the timing of Coach Fiore's departure, we are very fortunate to have Coach Gilroy and be able to promote him to the second assistant," said Sowell. "We are very excited to have Terry and because we were able to promote from within it helps maintain continuity from last season."
This is a one year position for Gilroy since he is a third year law student and finishing up his law degree.
While a volunteer assistant last season, Gilroy concentrated his efforts on the team's man-down defense, which was recognized by the NCAA for allowing the fewest goals in the nation when other teams had an extra-man opportunity. This season, he will continue to work with the man-down defense as well as help Sowell with the overall defense.
Gilroy was a standout lacrosse player at Army from 1996-97. During his senior year, he helped lead the Black Knights to a Patriot League Championship and was named to the Patriot League's All-Academic team. He also received the F. Morris Touchstone Award that year, which is the coaches award for personal service.
