Queens, NY - After a stellar performance in leading the St. John's baseball team to a three-game series sweep of Pittsburgh at home last weekend, Red Storm junior pitcher Anthony Varvaro (Staten Island, NY) earned a variety of weekly awards on Tuesday, both on the regional and national level.
Led by Varvaro, the Red Storm enter Wednesday's game at Fairleigh Dickinson (Teaneck, NJ, 3 p.m. first pitch) having won their last six games, improving to 15-9 overall and 4-1 in the BIG EAST.
Varvaro improved to 4-2 on Sunday with a dominating performance against Pittsburgh. The 6-1 right-hander struck out 17 batters in St. John's 2-0 win to open the series. The 17 strikeouts were a career-high and a St. John's single game record, and fell one shy of the BIG EAST record held by former Seton Hall pitcher Jason Grilli and former Notre Dame hurler Aaron Heilman.
Varvaro struck out the side in the first inning and recorded at least two punch-outs in every inning from the second to the eighth before making way for junior closer Craig Hansen (Glen Cove, NY).
As a result of his performance, Varvaro was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks, and for the fourth time in his career. Varvaro was also named the ECAC Division I Pitcher of the Week.
A preseason All-BIG EAST selection, Varvaro also gained some national recognition, being named one of Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week and earning honor roll mention from the College Baseball Foundation.
In his last four starts, Varvaro has a 3-1 record with a 0.64 earned run average, giving up only two earned runs on 14 hits, with seven walks and 15 strikeouts.
Overall this season, Varvaro carries a 4-2 record with a 2.49 earned run average. He has thrown 43.1 innings and given up 13 runs (12 earned) on 31 hits with 12 walks and 65 strikeouts.
For his career, Varvaro is 16-11 overall with a 3.77 earned run average. He has thrown 196 innings and struck out 199 batters. Entering the 2005 season, he ranked 10th on the career strikeout charts and has moved up to sixth. He needs seven more to pass Martin Dwonarski (1971-73) for fifth all-time.
After Wednesday's game at FDU, the Red Storm resume BIG EAST play, traveling for a three-game series at Georgetown.
