Saturday, April 9, 2005, Amherst, MA - The St. John's University men's lacrosse team fell to #10 UMass 14-6, in an ECAC game this afternoon at Garber Field. The Minutemen improve to 7-2 (2-1 ECAC), while the Red Storm fall to 2-8 (0-4 ECAC).
Freshman Justin O'Donnell scored a team-high four goals, while Tom Michaelsen added two goals for the Red Storm. Goalie Dave Saccente recorded 18 saves against a tough UMass offense.
UMass got on the board first with goals by Jeff Zywicki at the 10:45 mark and Chris Doyle at 2:50 in the first quarter. St. John's midfielder Justin O'Donnell responded a goal after a groundball pickup from Felix Forbes to put the Red Storm on the board with 49 seconds left. After three quick goals by the Minutemen in the second quarter, St. John's kept fighting, and cut the lead to two, after goals from Michaelsen and O'Donnell, ending the half at 5-3.
The Minutemen came out strong in the beginning minutes of the third quarter, scoring four unanswered goals against the Red Storm defense. UMass continued their rally, scoring two more goals by Brett Garber and Clay Stabert, before O'Donnell answered back scoring a goal with two seconds left to end the third quarter 11-4.
The Red Storm attempted a late game run with goals by Michaelsen and O'Donnell in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as the Minutemen took the game at 14-6.
UMass out shot the Red Storm 51-18, and held the edge in groundballs, 36-26.
The Red Storm returns to action next Saturday, April 16, when they will travel to State College, PA to face Penn State University, in another key ECAC match up. Face off is set for 1 p.m.
