Penn State Defeats St. John's 12-4

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA, April 16, 2005 - The St. John's men's lacrosse team dropped an ECAC match up to Penn State, 12-4, this afternoon in front of 578 fans at Jeffrey Field. The Lions improve to 5-5 (3-1 ECAC), while the Red Storm fall to 2-9 (0-5 ECAC).
Two minutes into the first quarter, midfielder Patrick Heim found the back of the net to put the Lions up 1-0. Attackman Will Cutler fired a hard shot from the top of the zone 15 seconds later to give Penn State a 2-0 lead. Chris Gannett notched his first goal of the season with an unassisted tally at the 7:24 mark and John Eremus followed with his first goal of the game to put the Lions up 4-0. Whitaker brought the first quarter to a close when he scored a goal on an assist from Brian Boyle which gave the Lions a 5-0 lead. Goal keeper Chris Courteau shut out the Red Storm in the quarter and the Nittany Lion defense held St. John's to three shots in the opening period of play.
St. John's found the scoreboard at the 8:52 mark in the second quarter when Mike McGuire notched an unassisted goal. The Lions responded with two straight unassisted goals from midfielder Gil Pearsall and Cutler. Felix Forbes tallied his third goal of the season for the Red Storm with four minutes remaining in the quarter but Whitaker and Boyle connected again for Penn State with 1:15 remaining to give the Lions an 8-2 lead at halftime.
The Lions would again outscore the Red Storm in the third quarter 3-2. St. John's rallied with two consecutive goals in the quarter from Randy Mills and Patrick Zeis but Gannett was able to counter with his second goal of the day to increase the Penn State lead to11-4 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Senior captain Mike Jacober netted the lone goal in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 12-4 in favor of the Lions.
The Lions out shot the Red Storm, 34-30, and held the edge in groundballs, 48-40. Goalie Dave Saccente recorded 17 saves in the loss.
The Red Storm returns to action next Saturday, April 23rd, when they will host Hobart in its last home game of the season. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.
