Queens, NY- The St. John's lacrosse team has announced its opponents for two tournaments this fall. The Red Storm travels to Maryland for the "Lacrosse for Leukemia" Fall Invitational and then to Hofstra a week later to play for the Algonquin Cup.
Lacrosse for Leukemia: In the Price Modern "Lacrosse for Leukemia" Fall Invitational Tournament, the Red Storm will battle the University of Albany and Villanova University on Oct. 1 in Brooklandville, MD.
Albany has won the America East Conference (AEC) championship the past three years and has also earned berths to the NCAA tournament. The Great Danes won the AEC regular season title in 2002. Villanova made the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament in 2003 and 2005, and in 2004 made the finals of the CAA.
Twelve teams have been invited to this year's tournament including last season's national champions Johns Hopkins and 2004 national title winner, Syracuse. The "Lacrosse for Leukemia" tournament benefits the Maryland chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Each team will also play in honor of a local youth ambassador who has survived or is undergoing treatment for the disease.
Algonquin Cup: On Oct. 9, the Red Storm will play for the Algonquin Cup at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. St. John's received a bye in the first round of the six-team, single-day tournament, and collides in the semifinals with the winner of the Hofstra vs. Cornell match up. The semifinal match-up begins at 11:30 a.m. If the Red Storm wins, then it will meet the winner of the Stony Brook vs. Duke/Hobart contest in the championship at James M. Stuart Stadium at 3 p.m. If St. John's falls in the semifinals, the Red Storm plays in the consolation match at 3 p.m. on the grass field.
Hofstra made it to the semifinals of the CAA Tournament the last two seasons while Cornell won the Ivy League Championship last season and qualified for the NCAA tournament advancing to the quarterfinal round. It marked the third time in four years the Big Red played in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Storm Watch: The Red Storm went 2-11 in its first season of action since 1995 while playing in the highly competitive East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC). St. John's head coach Rick Sowell is a nationally respected coach, who was at the helm of Dartmouth for five years, leading the Big Green to a co-Ivy League championship and NCAA tournament berth in 2003. Before coaching at Dartmouth, he was an assistant coach at Georgetown for eight years.
