The win improved the Red Storm to 1-0 overall, while the Crusaders fell to 0-1.
The Red Storm jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when graduate student Sebastian Alvarado-Ralph (Gothenburg, Sweden) knocked a deflected shot in front of the box past Holy Cross goalkeeper Richard Whipple. Sophomore Steven Old (Palmerston North, New Zealand/North Palmerston) was credited with the assist after senior Jeff Carroll's (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) corner kick.
The lead grew to two goals midway through the second half when graduate student Matt Groenwald (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) took a pass from senior Andre Schmid (Sacramento, Calif.) and put a shot past Whipple to the far post from 12 yards out.
Old scored the third goal of the game for St. John's in the 77th minute. Carroll's corrner went to the far side of the box, where it deflected off a Holy Cross defender, off of sophomore Ben Shuleva (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and then off of Old and past Whipple, giving the Red Storm a 3-0 lead.
St. John's had controlled play for much of the game. Groenwald had a breakaway and his shot from 16 yards out was stopped on a kick-save by Whipple early in the first half. In the 23rd minute, Schmid picked up a loose ball on the near sideline, cut in toward the middle of the field and pulled up for a shot that went just wide.
The Red Storm out-shot Holy Cross, 13-4, and took seven corner kicks to the Crusaders' two.
Sophomore Jason Landers (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Wissahickon) made three saves in his first career shutout.
St. John's plays San Diego State on Saturday in second round action at 5:30 p.m.
