Queens, NY-- St. John's head lacrosse coach Rick Sowell has announced a challenging schedule for the 2006 season featuring contests with four teams that participated in the 2005 NCAA tournament and who also finished in the Top 15 of the USILA Coaches' Poll. St. John's begins its second year of play since 1995 and also its second season in the highly competitive ECAC Conference.
"We are once again playing a schedule that will be a significant challenge for such a young program," said Sowell. "But, we are excited and are looking forward to playing it and seeing how we have progressed from one year ago."
The Red Storm kicks off its season on Saturday, Feb. 25 against another second year program, Robert Morris, at a neutral site in Baltimore at St. Paul's High School. The Colonials finished their inaugural season with an 0-6 record and will join the Colonial Athletic League this year.
St. John's ECAC Conference action gets underway the following weekend in the nation's capital on Saturday, March 4 against Georgetown. The Hoyas lost in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament last year and finished the season ranked 8th in the USILA Coaches' Poll with a 10-5 record.
The Red Storm plays six of its 13 games at home at DaSilva Memorial Field. The team's first home contest will be on Saturday, March 11 against Drexel. The Dragons ended last year 9-5.
St. John's collides with Hartford in Connecticut on Wednesday, March 15 and then hosts conference foe Loyola three days later on Saturday, March 18. The Red Storm goes back on the road, Saturday, March 25 when it travels to Colorado Springs, CO to take on the U.S. Air Force Academy.
On Wednesday, March 29, the Red Storm hosts Wagner before hitting the road April 1 and then on April 5 to battle Lafayette and Rutgers.
One of the Red Storm's biggest challenges of the season comes the following weekend at home on Saturday, Apr. 8 against last season's co-conference winner, Massachusetts. The Minutemen tied a school record last year winning 13 of their 16 games. UMass also advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament before falling to the eventual national championship winner, Johns Hopkins.
The Red Storm hosts last season's other ECAC co-conference winner, Penn State, on Saturday April 15. Last year, the Nittany Lions made the NCAA tournament and ended their season 9-6.
St. John's travels one more time to face off against conference opponent Hobart in Geneva, NY, and then returns home to conclude its regular season schedule against new ECAC member, Fairfield under the lights on Saturday, April 29. The Mustangs finished last season 11-5 and earned a NCAA tournament berth.
