Fencing Teams Continue Success At NYU Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams continued their winnings ways at the NYU Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 22. The men's team battled to earn a 3-2 record while the women's team picked up four wins and dropped two. Some of the nation's best competition was on hand as Notre Dame, Columbia, Nothrwestern, Ohio State and Wayne State were all in attendance.
The women's team was lead by the outstanding performance of captain Erzsebet Garay (Budapest, Hungary). She swept her bouts with Northwestern, Ohio State, NYU and Wayne State and went 2-1 against Notre Dame and Columbia. She posted a 16-2 record for the day and improves to 31-2 on the season.
Sophomore Katia Larchanka (Minsk, Belarus) also excelled on the women's side. She finished with 15 wins and three losses and went undefeated in bouts against Columbia, Notre Dame, Wayne State and NYU.
On the men's side, captain Ben Bratton (New York, N.Y.) proved to be the difference He finished out the day with an 11-4 record in the epee. Going undefeated in his bouts against local rival Columbia, Bratton helped the Red Storm edge the Lions, 14-13. Bratton was also undefeated against host school NYU.
The NYU event was a reunion of sorts as it brought together not only the 2005 NCAA champion Notre Dame and the second place team Ohio State but also the third place St. John's and fifth place Columbia squads.
The Red Storm will head to Happy Valley, Pa. this weekend to participate in the Penn State Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 28.
