Barreto, Brown and Sewell Each Win Gold Medals

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The St. John's track and field team competed at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational Friday at the 168th St. Armory. Three Red Storm members captured gold medals while two others qualified for the BIG EAST Championships.
Senior Jasmine Barreto (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the 800 meters while also running a personal best, clocking in at 2:13.54. Juniors Kellie Brown (Upper Darby, Pa.) and Alecia Sewell (Hanover, Jamaica) took the top spot in each of their events. Brown was victorious in the long jump with a leap of 5.57 meters while Sewell crossed the line in first in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.68 seconds.
Barreto, Brown and Sewell each qualified for the BIG EAST Championships with their performances. Sewell's performance also qualifies her for the ECAC Championships.
Meanwhile, senior Thamara Cherisme (Queens, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 500 meter run, with a BIG EAST Championships qualifying time of 1:17.20. Junior Kesheila Reid (St. Ann, Jamaica) also qualified for the conference championships in the 20 lb. weight throw,hurling the weight 15.83 meters for third place.
St. John's returns to action next weekend at the BIG EAST Championships in Akron, Ohio.
