St. John's Fencing Hosts Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams will welcome Rutgers University in their first ever fencing invitational. The event will take place on Carnesecca Court beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19. The Red Storm are led by captains Erzsebet Garay and Ben Bratton.
Noting The Red Storm
- The women are off to a 12-3 start while the men hold an 8-5 record.
- Captain Erzsebet Garay of the women's squad is having her best season in a Red Storm uniform. She has compiled 42 wins and only three losses this season in the foil. In her last outing at the Penn State Invitational, Garay was undefeated through 12 bouts.
- Freshman Olga Ovitchinnikova is on course to reach the 40-win plateau as well and is having an impressive season in the sabre with 36 wins and 9 losses.
- The late addition of Monika Golebiewski has made the women's foil team even stronger. In her first competition at Penn State, she finished 13-5.
- The women's foil team owns an 81-18 record.
- The men are led by transfer sophomore Luther Clement and junior captain Ben Bratton. Clement, a transfer from Columbia, has recorded 25 wins in the sabre. Bratton is having another strong season in the epee and has also collected 25 wins.
- Both Bratton and Clement have been competing internationally in the Senior World Cup Grand Prix competitions.
- The men's team has also seen late additions. Junior Sam Wunderlich rejoins the team and is off a 9-6 start in the foil. Nikita Tsukhlo and Misha Mokrestov will round out the sabre and foil squads, respectively.
- Next up for the Red Storm will be the Northeast Regional Championships on March 5 before gearing up for the NCAA Championships March 16-19.
