QUEENS, N.Y. - Two members of the St. John's men's fencing team have been competing overseas in the Senior World Cup Grand Prix competitions. Junior Ben Bratton and sophomore Luther Clement made recent trips to represent the United State teams abroad.
Bratton, who competes with the epee, has traveled to both Kuwait and Qatar in the last two weeks. While in Kuwait on Jan. 27-29, he dueled as an individual and as a member of Team USA. Bratton finished 55th out of 130 fencers, which was the second-highest showing by an American at the event. As a team, USA finished fourth among 21 teams.
Next up was Doha, Qatar from Feb. 10-12. Bratton spent two days competing individually and finished in 96th place. Team USA came in 15th while in Qatar, facing different international opponents such as the Czech Republic, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.
Clement was part of the sabre team that dueled in Tunis, Tunisia on Jan. 27-29. As an individual, he ranked 48th among 93 competitors and came in fifth among Americans. Clement partnered with St. John's fencing alumni Ivan Lee and Keeth Smart as a member of Team USA. The group finished fifth in a pool of 15 countries.
"I was happy to be a member of a team with such accomplished Olympians," said Clement. "I look forward to even better results in the future."
Clement will head to Seoul, Korea on Feb. 24-26 to compete in another leg of the Senior World Cup Grand Prix.
