QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team fell to South Florida, 7-0, in its first BIG EAST match of the season on Sunday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The Red Storm falls to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Bulls improve to 5-2 and 1-0 in the BIG EAST.
South Florida 7, St. John's 0
USF earned the doubles point after taking all thee matches. No. 12 Gabriela Duch and Neyssa Etienne topped Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) and Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Latvia), 8-2, at the No. 1 spot. South Florida continued the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win from Liz Cruz and Iciri Rai over Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislova, Slovakia) and Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) at the No. 2 spot. Meanwhile, Luisa Obando and Courtney Vernon blanked Ashley Harper (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.), 8-0, at the No. 3 position.
In singles competition, South Florida took all six matches en route to the 7-0 victory. No. 38 Vernon and No. 69 Liz Cruz both improved their spring record to 6-0 with their straight-set wins over Chachua and Blahutiakova at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.
North Florida 5, St. John's 2
In other matches this weekend, the Red Storm fell, 5-2, to the Lady Ospreys of North Florida on Friday, Feb. 24. St. John's picked up a doubles win at the No. 1 position and earned its two points in singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots thanks to strong efforst from Adamski and Tumsevica.
In doubles action, the St. John's No. 1 doubles pair earned a tough 8-6 victory over Katja Brandt and Lauren Cockbill, and then proceeded to grab both singles points for the Red and White. Tumsevica knocked out Brandt (6-1, 6-0) at the No. 1 spot, while Adamski continued her winning ways with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Cockbill.
The Red Storm returns to action on Saturday, March 11 against BIG EAST newcomer DePaul and will then face weekend host West Virginia on Sunday, March 12 in Morgantown, W.Va. First serve is at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
