Women's Tennis Defeats Binghamton 6-1 In Season Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm women's tennis team opened the 2006 season with a 6-1 win over the Bearcats of Binghamton Saturday afternoon. St. John's was lead at the No. 1 singles position by Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Latvia), along with Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislova, Slovakia) and Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) in the No. 2 doubles position.
In doubles action, the Red Storm triumphed at the No. 2 with Blahutiakova and Chachua defeating Lya Kushnirovich and Julianna Umeki (8-4). At the No. 3 spot, Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) and Ashley Harper (Mullica Hill, N.J.) came away with an 8-2 win over Alex Sinclair and Gayarthri Balasundar.
In singles play, Tumsevica topped Jelena Koprivica (7-5, 6-0) at the No. 1 position while Chachua defeated Jenn Naeglei (6-2, 6-1). At the No. 4 spot, Lorenzetti took her match (6-2, 6-0) over Gayarthri Balasundar and Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) topped Alex Sinclair (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 5 position. St. John's took the No. 6 spot by default.
The Red Storm returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 12 p.m. against Army.
