QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team defeated West Virginia, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in Morgantown, W.Va. The Red Storm (3-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) earned the doubles point early in the victory over the Mountaineers.
In doubles play, Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislova, Slovakia) and Mariana Chachua (Tblisi, Georgia) topped Natalia Prinz and Colleen Speaker, 8-6, at the No. 2 position, while Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) and Gabija Gasiunaite (Kanuas, Latvia) earned a hard fought win over Ashley Constantine and Catherine Koontz, 9-7, at the No. 3 spot. But at the No. 1 position, Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Lithuania) and Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) fell, 8-5, to Raynie Theis and Stacey Percival.
In singles action, Chachua picked up a win at the No. 2 spot over Percival (7-5, 6-1), while Lorenzetti cruised past Speaker (6-2, 7-5) at the No. 4 position. Meanwhile, Adamski secured the team's victory with a win over senior Theis (7-5, 6-3) at the No. 5 spot.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday, March 24 when it will host the Pirates of Seton Hall in BIG EAST competition. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. on the Courts at St. John's.
