Erzsebet Garay Earns 2006 NCAA Women's Individual Championship Title

QUEENS, N.Y. - After two days of competition, the St. John's women's fencing team finished fifth overall at the 2006 NCAA Championships. Junior Erzsebet Garay (Budapest, Hungaray) earned the Women's Foil Individual Championship title.
Garay was victorious in 22 of her 24 bouts and emerged as the clear favorite to take the title after earning 15 win in day one. As captain of the women's team, she has been phenomenal all season, posting 45 wins and only three losses. In 2005, Garay finished fourth overall. This is the first championship title of her career.
"Garay was incredible," said head coach Yury Gelman. "She was really outstanding right from the beginning and we knew that she had a great opportunity to take the title. I'm very proud of her hard work."
Teammate Katia Larchanka (Minsk, Belarus) captured 15 wins, finishing seventh overall in the foil. Coming in eight for the Red Storm was sophomore Reka Szele (Budapest, Hungary) in the Epee. Competiting in the sabre were Olga Ovitchinnikova (Toronto, Canada) and Kasia Wieronski (Warren, N.J.). Ovitchinnikova took tenth place in first NCAA Champioship outing while Wieronski finished 22nd. Rounding out the finishers for the Red Storm was Joanna Guy (Toronto, Canada), coming in 20th in the epee.
