QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team stormed past Georgetown on its way to a 7-0 victory Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The win over the Hoyas gave the Red Storm its third straight conference and overall win.
"I am happy with the team's progress," said head coach Allison Davidson. "If we keep up with the way we have been playing, we will be a solid contender at the BIG EAST Tournament. The girls are really understanding that in order to win, we need to win as a team."
In doubles action, Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) and Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Latvia) topped Stephanie Cohen and Natalie Newman, 9-7, at the No. 1 position, while Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) downed Liz Winokur and Eileen Boyle, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot. Completing the doubles sweep was Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) and Gabija Gasiunaite (Kaunas, Lithuania). The duo recorded an, 8-5, victory over Adriann Gin and Courtney Olsen at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, four members of the Red Storm picked up straight sets wins. Tumsevica topped Winokur (6-4, 6-2) at the No. 1 spot, while Blahutiakova went (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 3 spot over Newman. At the No. 4 spot, Lorenzetti stormed past Gin (6-1, 6-2) and Adamski swept Olsen (6-2, 6-2) at the No. 5 position. Meanwhile, the Hoyas pushed Chachua and Ashley Harper (Mullica Hill, N.J.) to three set matches. Chachua pulled away with a hard fought victory over Cohen (4-6, 6-1, 13-11) at the No. 2 position and Harper downed Taylor Martin (6-1, 6-7(0), 10-5) at the No. 6 spot.
The Red Storm returns to action on Thursday, March 30 against Long Island rival Stony Brook. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. on the Stony Brook campus.
