QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team topped Stony Brook, 4-3, Friday afternoon. Senior Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) picked up the winning point for the Red Storm at the No. 4 spot. St. John's is now 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Stony Brook drops to 5-4 overall.
The Red Storm picked up the doubles point with victories in all three matches. Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.J.) and Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Latvia) downed America East Co-Player of the Week Anne-Catherine Valle and Hana Chovanova, 8-2, at the No. 1 position, while Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) topped Sandy Wijeratne and Erica Federgreen, 8-3, at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 position, Lorenzetti and Gabija Gasiunaite (Kaunas, Lithuania) knocked down Monica Myers and Victoria Vovsha, 8-2.
In singles action, the Red Storm recorded wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions, but it was Lorenzetti's No. 4 victory that gave the Red Storm the 4-3 win. She defeated Federgreen (6-3, 7-5) in straight sets. At the No. 3 spot, Chachua swept Chovanova (6-1, 6-1), while Adamski blanked Myers (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 4 spot.
The Red Storm returns to BIG EAST action Saturday afternoon at Rutgers. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
