Women's Tennis Travels to Stony Brook Friday Afternoon

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team will travel to Long Island Friday afternoon to face Stony Brook at 3 p.m. Stony Brook leads the series 2-1.
The Red Storm and Seawolves last met on Feb. 7, 2004 at Colgate University. St. John's swept local rival Stony Brook, 7-0. The Seawolves posed no problem for the Red Storm as the team was victorious at all six singles and three doubles matches.
- NOTING THE RED STORM
St. John's is 5-6 overall and 3-2 in BIG EAST action. Junior captain Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) continues to lead the Red Storm with an 8-3 overall singles record playing at the No. 5 spot. Senior Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) is second on the team with a 6-4 overall mark at the No. 4 position.
In doubles action, Lorenzetti and freshman Gabija Gasiunaite (Kaunas, Lithuania) are currently undefeated at the No. 3 spot (4-0), while Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) are 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
In its last outing, the Red Storm blanked the Hoyas of Georgetown, 7-0, in league play. The victory over the Hoyas gave the Red Storm its third straight conference and overall win. In singles play, four members of the Red Storm picked up straight set wins, while the Hoyas pushed Chachua and Ashley Harper (Mullica Hill, N.J.) to three set matches.
- SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES
Stony Brook enters Friday's contest with a 5-3 overall record and has not played an America East opponent yet this spring. Senior Anne-Catherine Valle and sophomore Sandy Wijeratne lead the Seawolves in singles action. At the No. 1 spot, Valle posts a 9-3 overall mark, while Wijeratne is 8-5 at the No. 3 singles spot. In doubles action, junior Victoria Vasile and Valle lead the Seawolves with a 3-2 record at the No. 2 position.
Valle was named the America East's Co-Player of the Week on March 21 for her efforts against Colgate, Cornell and Dartmouth.
In its last contest, the Stony Brook topped Long Island University, 5-2, on March 26. The Seawolves earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for an early advantage going into singles action. Stony Brook picked up wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, with Valle and Monica Myers pulling away with three set victories.
