WASHINGTON, D.C. - The St. John's lacrosse team dropped to No. 10 Georgetown in the ECAC Lacrosse League opener, 9-5, Saturday in the nation's capital. Red Storm goalkeeper Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.) tied his personal best with 18 saves in the game.
The Hoyas struck first almost halfway through the first quarter when senior midfielder Pete Cannon put the ball by Saccente on the lower left side of the cage. Saccente made four saves on the doorstep before allowing this goal.
GU ended the first quarter with an offensive flurry, connecting on four goals over the final six minutes to widen the lead to 5-0 at the first intermission.
St. John's responded early in the second quarter. Just thirty seconds into the second period, midfielder Bobby Fitton (Oak Hill, Va.) took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity with Hoyas goalie Miles Kass to put the Red Storm on the scoreboard.
St. John's scored two more times to make the score 5-3. The first goal came at the hands of sophomore Robert Gannon (Port Washington, N.Y) off an assist by freshman Thomas Manes (Philadelphia, Pa.) and then sophomore Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) connected on an unassisted goal one minute later.
The Hoyas ended St. John's three-goal run when Cannon picked up his fourth assist on the day when he found junior attackman Trevor Casey for the goal.
Red Storm sophomore Jack Rosson (Severna Park, Md.) made the score 6-4 when he fired the ball from ten feet out, but Hoyas sophomore Mike McBride responded right away to make it 7-4, which was the score at halftime.
After a scoreless third, Rosson scored off a feed by Michaelsen on a man-up situation to inch closer to the Hoya lead. The three goal deficit was as close as St. John's would get as GU made it 9-5 a few minutes later.
Despite the loss, the Red Storm battled Georgetown all afternoon on both the offense and defensive fronts. The two schools split the battles from the X, each winning eight of 16. The Hoyas outshot St. John's by just nine and collected only 10 more groundballs. The Red Storm took advantage of the extra man opportunities, converting two of six.
The Red Storm returns to action next Saturday, March 11 for its home opener at DaSilva Memorial Field when the team collides with the Dragons from Drexel. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. To order tickets, you can either log on to www.redstormsports.com or call the hotline at 1-888-GO-STORM.
