St. John’s Prepares for Regular Season Finale Against Providence on Friday Night

The Johnnies lead the all-time series against the Friars, 15-10
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team (2-11, 0-3 BIG EAST) will look to close out the season with a win as they compete in their final matchup against Providence (6-8, 2-2 BIG EAST) in Queens, N.Y. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Johnny Gadamowitz and Kevin Connelly on the call. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Last time out, Adrian Nowak paced St. John's with his second hat trick of the season, while Owen Rogers and Brody Hergott each chipped in two goals in an 18-11 loss to Georgetown.
Matt Nelson recorded 11 saves, marking his 12th game this season with double-digit stops.
The Red Storm trailed just 5-4 after the opening quarter, but Georgetown pulled away with a strong second period and a 5-0 run in the third to take a 16-7 advantage. St. John's battled late with goals from Nowak, Mitch Campbell, Hergott and AJ Jeffares, but the Hoyas held on for the victory.
St. John's continues to be one of the top man-down defensive units in the nation, ranking 11th nationally with an .737 success rate. Opponents have converted on just 10 of 38 extra-man opportunities against the Red Storm this season.
Rogers has become one of the staples of the Johnnies offense, scoring in his last six games, totaling nine goals and four assists in those six games. On the year, the Johnnie debutant has put up 19 points on 13 goals and six assists.
Providence enters Friday's regular season finale riding a two game winning streak, with BIG EAST overtime victories over Denver and Villanova. The Friars are 6-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play, with both league losses coming in overtime against Georgetown and Marquette. Providence has played in five overtime games this season, the most in the NCAA, including three in BIG EAST action.
After reaching the BIG EAST Tournament in 2025, Head Coach Bobby Benson returns three of the team's top five scorers. Rhett Chambers leads the offense with 58 points (29G, 29A) through 14 games, earning three conference weekly honors and a NEILA Team of the Week selection.
BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Richie Joseph has added 36 points (28G, 8A). In goal, Cam Sterrit has started every game, posting a 10.96 goals-against average with 153 saves.
Defensively, Ian Olenik leads the team with 22 caused turnovers, ranking 19th nationally, and has earned recognition from both USILA and NEILA this season.
Despite holding a 15-10 advantage all-time against the Friars, the Red Storm are seeking their first victory over Providence since April 2015, where St. John's came out victorious 17-7.
