OGUN STATE, NIGERIA - St. John's track and field thrower Blessing Egwu (Queens, N.Y.) finished second in both the hammer throw and in the shot put this past week at the 15th National Festival in Ogun State, Nigeria. Egwu's performances land her a spot on the Nigerian national team.
"I'm very proud of Blessing," said throwing coach Virginia Young-Coleman. "I expect nothing but fantastic things from her in the future."
Egwu and the Nigerian national team will compete next at the All-Africa Championships in the Republic of Mauritius in August and then at the World Cup in Athens, Greece in September.
Egwu competed at the USA Track and Field Championships this past February, capturing eighth place in the shot put and 10th in the 20 lb. weight throw. She also won two silver medals at the BIG EAST Championships, one in the shot put and the other in the weight throw. At the ECAC Indoor Championships, Egwu finished second in the weight throw and third in the shot put.
During the 2005 outdoor season, Egwu won gold at the BIG EAST Championships in the hammer throw. She also took third in the hammer at the ECAC Championships and competed at the NCAA Regionals.
