Blessing Egwu Qualifies For NCAA Championships

Blessing Egwu (Queens, N.Y.) was selected to compete in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif., from June 7-10. Egwu was given an at-large berth into the championship meet.
Egwu joins teammate Kaydian Reid (Windsor, Conn.), who automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing fifth in the 400 meter dash at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships this past weekend.
Egwu finished eighth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, hurling the weight 55.86 meters. Her best performance was recorded at the Penn Relays in late April when she threw the hammer 59.93 meters. Reid crossed the line in 52.68 seconds for her best time at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, which was held in early May.
Egwu???s mark is the 24th best throw in the country while Reid???s time is the 13th best.
"We are very pleased and excited to be going to the NCAA Championships with Kaydian and Blessing," said head coach Jim Hurt. "Both have had outstanding seasons and have worked hard to reach the top level of NCAA track and field competition. They continue a streak of 16 straight years that a St. John???s track and field member has competed at the NCAA track and field championships."
The preliminary round of the 400 meter dash will be held on Wednesday, June 7 while the qualifying round for the hammer throw is on Thursday, June 8. The semifinal round for the 400 meter dash is scheduled for Friday, June 9 and the finals for both the 400 meter dash and the hammer throw will be on Saturday, June 10.
