Blessing Egwu Wins Bronze At BIG EAST Championships

STORRS, CONN. - Blessing Egwu (Queens, N.Y.) captured third place in the shot put throw at the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex on the University of Connecticut campus. She threw the shot put 13.91 meters (45'7 ¾").
Egwu's finish lands her a spot on the All-BIG EAST team. On Sunday, she will defend her BIG EAST title in the hammer throw.
Also in the throws, Grace Zollman (Joseph, Ore.) launched the javelin 44.66 meters (146'6") for fourth place while Kesheila Reid (St. Ann, Jamaica) threw the discus 46.00 meters (150'11") for seventh.
On the track, Kaydian Reid (Windsor, Conn.) clocked in with the best time in the 400 meter dash preliminaries, recording a time of 53.60 seconds. Reid also competed in the 200 meter dash, crossing the line in 24.56 seconds for the fourth fastest time of the afternoon. She will participate in the finals of both events on Sunday.
Thalene King (Manchestar, Jamaica) and Tarashon Broomes (Fair Lawn, N.J.) also rain the in the 400 meter dash. King finished in 55.62 seconds for the fifth best time in the preliminaries while Broomes posted a 56.45 second time. King qualified for Sunday's finals.
Phobay Kutu-Akoi (Silver Spring, Md.), meanwhile, crossed the line in 12.13 seconds in the 100 meter dash.
In the long jump, Kellie Brown (Upper Darby, Pa.) finished in eighth place with a jump of 5.65 meters (18'6 ½").
At the conclusion of the first day of competition, St. John's is in seventh place with 14 points. Syracuse leads the championship meet with 53 points while Pittsburgh and Notre Dame round out the top three with 38 and 33.50 points, respectively. The BIG EAST Championships will conclude Sunday. The Red Storm's first event is slated for 11 a.m.
