Jaclyn Sanders, a senior on the St. John???s women???s golf team, was one of 29 female athletes to earn a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this spring. The Postgraduate Scholarship awards $7,500 to the recipient for graduate education at his or her university of choice.
"This is a prestigious and well deserved honor for Jaclyn, who exemplifies the ideal of what a student-athlete should endeavor to be ??? successful in the classroom, in the community and in the athletic arena," said Chris Monasch, Director of Athletics. "All of us at the University are very proud of her accomplishments."
During her career at St. John???s, Sanders excelled both in the classroom and on the course. In 2005, she earned ESPN Academic All-America honors and helped the Red Storm take home its first ever BIG EAST Championship title with a fourth place individual finish. Sanders also earned two individual tournament championships, taking back-to-back titles at the Rutgers Invitational in 2003 and 2004.
"I am very proud of Jaclyn and all she has accomplished during her time at St. John???s," said head women???s golf coach Ambry Bishop. "She was a key component in our program???s success over the last few seasons and she will be missed greatly."
Academically, Sanders graduated with a 3.99 GPA. She double majored in English and Sports Management and minored in Art History. During St. John???s 2006 Spring Commencement Ceremonies, Sanders was one of the students that had the privilege of speaking at graduation.
Sanders plans to attend Reading University in London, England, beginning in October. She will work towards her masters in Printing and Book Design.
"The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship is allowing me to fulfill my ultimate goal of going to graduate school," said Sanders. "Without the scholarship, it would not be possible. I worked incredibly hard during my time at St. John???s and it feels great to be rewarded."
The NCAA awards 174 scholarships annually and distributes them equally over each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Only 29 males and 29 females in institutions across the nation earned awards this spring. To be eligible, the athlete must be in their final year of intercollegiate competition, maintain a 3.2 GPA or higher and be nominated by a member of the athletics faculty.
