Red Storm Wins Three At Yale Invitational

With two outright individual event winners and a great team effort in the 4x400m relay, the St. John???s Track and Field team scored 17 Top-10 finishes at the Yale Invitational this weekend.
Dominique Easen defeated all competition with a 16.15 meter distance in the weight throw competition, reaching ECAC and Big East qualifying standards for the second straight meet. Tetee Kuyateh also placed in the Top-3 with a third place 15.60 meter throw. Kuyateh???s throw also met Big East qualifying standards.
Sophomore Maxcine Foster led the pack of four Red Storm athletes with her winning time of 55.04 in the 400m dash. The Red Storm finished all four athletes competing in the 400m in the top-10 of 46 competitors. Thalene King placed just behind Foster with a second place time of 55.57. Asia Davy and Asia Nettles finished fifth and ninth respectively, with times of 58.03 and 59.94.
The Red Storm finished the day with a win in the 4x400m relay competition. Phobay Kutu-Akoi, Foster, Davy and King defeated the other 14 teams with a time of 3:49.48, 10.07 seconds in front of the second place team from Southern Connecticut State. Kutu-Atoi, and Foster???s performances in the event were enough to count for both Big East and ECAC qualifying times. Davy???s time was enough for an ECAC qualifier.
Kellie Brown, Fayanne Francis and Venisa Clarke-Lee all fell just shy of winning their individual events. Brown placed second in the long jump with a distance of 5.44m. Francis fell just nine hundredths of a meter short of first place in the triple jump with a distance of 10.58. With a 1.70 meter height in the high jump competition, Clarke-Lee matched Sacred Heart???s Brittany Dexter???s first place score.
In the 60m dash, Kutu-Akoi qualified in for ECAC and Big East competition with her fifth place time of 7.71 seconds. Paula Rennalls also placed in the Top 10 in the event with an eighth place time of 7.93.
"We are very pleased to see our team compete so well at the new venue up at Yale," remarked head coach Jim Hurt. "We are looking forward to coming back to the Armory this weekend and try to continue to qualify ourselves for the major championships later this season."
Next up, the Red Storm track and field team will compete at the Great Dane Invitational at home in the Amory. The meet is scheduled for Jan. 19.
