Fencing Makes Strong Showing At NYU Invitational

The Red Storm fencing teams competed locally at the NYU Invitational last Sunday, taking on the likes of Notre Dame, Wayne State, NYU and Columbia. The men???s team was dominant inside the strip, posting four wins and one loss on the day and improving their overall record to 9-1. Despite being short-handed, the women???s squad went 3-2 and are now 8-2 on the season.
The men???s team received standout performances from its upperclassmen and was solid in each of the three weapons. Junior Luther Clement anchored the sabre team with 12 wins while captains Ben Bratton (12-3) and Sam Wunderlich (13-2) led the epee and foil squads, respectively. Wunderlich now leads the men???s team in wins with a 27-3 record. Sophomore Stan Vaksman also chipped in 12 wins in the epee.
Sophomore Olya Ovtchinnikova led the women???s team and the sabre fencers with 13 wins and only two losses. Captain Monkia Golebiewski and newcomer Dagmara Wozniak each recorded 12 wins for the Red Storm and junior Katia Larchanka added 11 to help the women capture three wins on the day.
The Red Storm fencing teams will host Rutgers and Sacred Heart at the St. John???s Invitational on Feb. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. in Carnesecca Arena. Admission is free to the public.
