10/19/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Oct. 19, 2007
• The St. John's women's soccer team will play its final regular-season away games this weekend. The Red Storm faces Rutgers Friday at 7 p.m., then heads to Seton Hall for a 1 p.m. Sunday match-up.
Weekend Storylines
• St. John's is looking to get back in the win column after two tough losses on the road last weekend at Marquette (1-0) and South Florida (4-2). Against the Bulls, freshman Alicia Barnaby notched her first career goal and fellow rookie Maria DeMatteo added another, but a late St. John's rally fell short in Tampa. Erin Bohn was also a highlight of the weekend, as she tallied both Red Storm assists at USF.
• Rutgers and Seton Hall are both in the National Division of the BIG EAST, while St. John's sits in fourth place in the standings of the American Division.
• Senior Krystle Jalalian continues to lead the Red Storm offensively. The forward has totaled 12 points on the year (5g, 2a) and ranks tied for ninth in the BIG EAST for goals. The Red Storm offense has been extremely balanced, however, as 10 different players have tallied goals (Jalalian, Raelynne Lee, Kelly McConnell, Erin Bohn, DeMatteo, Barnaby, Nicole Pasciolla, Kaitlin Haas, Tara Mendoza and Nicole Canning.) Of that group, Lee and McConnell rank second behind Jalalian with four goals apiece.
• St. John's has posted five shutouts on the year, and Jaime Beran and Rebecca Capinera continue to split time in goal, and Beran's goals-against average (0.63) ranks sixth in the league.
• St. John's trails the all-time series with Rutgers, 7-1-2, and the last meeting was an Oct. 15, 2006 scoreless tie. The Red Storm leads the series with Seton Hall, 6-4-1, including two victories last season.
In The Rankings
• The Red Storm is currently ranked sixth in the Northeast region by the NSCAA and fourth by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
Weekly Honors For Jalalian, Lee
• After totaling three goals during all of 2006, Krystle Jalalian exploded offensively in the first otweekend of 2007, scoring three goals and adding an assist. A week later, Raelynne Lee was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week (Sept. 10).
• Tara Mendoza (Sept. 24) and Kelly McConnell (Oct. 1) have each been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
First Time For Everything
• Sophomores Mendoza and Canning each scored their first career goals on Sept. 30 against Pittsburgh.
Pasciolla's Game-Winner Selected As Goal Of The Week
• St. John's sophomore midfielder Nicole Pasciolla, who scored her first goal of the season just before time expired in the first overtime period in a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on Sept. 7, was named the winner of the BigAppleSoccer.com women's college goal of the week for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 9.
A Look At Rutgers
• The Scarlet Knights, picked to finish second in the National Division, are 6-7-2 on the year and 1-4-2 in the BIG EAST.
• Gina DeMaio leads the offense with five goals, while goalkeeper Erin Guthrie has posted six shutouts on the season.
