Women's Basketball Set To Face UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The St. John's women's basketball team will face the University of Alabama Birmingham for the Blazer Invitational Championship title on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
• This marks the second time this season, in as many tries, the St. John's women's basketball team advances to the championship game of a tournament. The Red Storm made an appearance in the final stage of the Vermont TD Banknorth Classic and is appearing in the UAB Blazer Invitational. At its first tournament of the season, the team fell to Vermont, 66-48, on Nov. 18.
• St. John's is coming off a 69-53 win over Louisiana Monroe in the opening round of the Blazer Invitational. It was the first meeting between the two teams.
• The contest between the Red Storm and the Blazers is the first meeting between the clubs. UAB is one of four first-time opponents for St. John's this season.
A Tale Of Two Halves • Against Louisiana Monroe, the Red Storm went into the break with only a four-point lead. The team's offense was inconsistent, but found a way to stay in front. After half-time, the team came out of the locker room firing, going on a 13-0 run to open up. St. John's eventually went ahead by 20 points and then closed out with the 16-point victory, 69-53.
Kia Wright Turns In Solid Performance For The Red Storm • Only starting in her second game of the season due to an injury at the beginning of the year, senior Kia Wright had her biggest game of the 2007-08 campaign against Louisiana Monroe. The senior put up a season-high 19 points against the Warhawks. Twelve of her points came in the second half when St. John's turned things on and broke away from the other team to take a double-digit lead the remainder of the way.
Kia Watch Continues; Tallies 400th-Career Assist • As senior Kia Wright closes out her illustrious career with the Red Storm this year, she continues to etch her name in the record books. With four assists against ULM on Dec. 17, Wright tallied her 400th-career helper and moved into fourth place in the career record books at St. John's.
• Wright is also making a dent in the all-time scoring list. With 1,242 points, she is 43 shy of moving into seventh place. In addition, she is 11 free throws away from holding the record with 340, and she is four 3-pointers away from moving into third place with 107. With three thefts against ULM, she moved into sole possession of fifth place with 196.
Get That Outta Here • Senior Tiina Sten continues to climb up the career record books in blocks. With three swats against Louisiana Monroe, the Turku, Finland, native moved up to eighth place with 72 for her career. She is seven away from moving past Angela Clark's total of 78 for seventh place.
