QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team returns to Carnesecca Arena to host No. 11 Baylor on Saturday at noon. The game opens a two-game homestand for the Red Storm.
• St. John's will be looking to get back on the winning track after losing to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, 80-71, on Tuesday night in the championship game of the Blazer Invitational. The Red Storm defeated Louisiana Monroe, 69-53, on Monday to advance to the tournament title game. The loss in the title contest was the team's second of the year, with the first coming at the hands of Vermont in the TD Banknorth Classic on Nov. 18.
• The meeting with the Lady Bears is the first between the teams and is the first for the Red Storm against a team from the Big 12 this season. In five previous meetings with Big 12 teams, St. John's has struggled, losing each time.
First Time For Everything
• On the schedule this season, the Red Storm has four first-time opponents featured. Maine, Louisiana Monroe, UAB or Delaware State, and Baylor are all first timers for St. John's.
Get That Outta Here
• Tiina Sten continues to climb up the rankings in the St. John's career record books. With three swats against Maine on Dec. 14, Sten moved into the Top 10 with 69 blocks. In the very next game for the Red Storm against Louisiana Monroe, the senior blocked three more shots and moved into eighth place with 72. She is currently six shy of moving past Angela Clark's 78 swats for seventh place.
Wright Reaching Milestones
• In her senior campaign, Kia Wright has achieved a career feat that has only been accomplished by one other player in St. John's history. Wright became the second Red Storm player to record 1,200 points and 400 assists for her career. The only other person to reach this plateau was Sue Bretthauer (1976-78), who scored 1,399 points and posted 521 assists.
Kia Moving Wright Up The Record Books
• Already ranked in numerous career categories entering her senior campaign, Kia Wright continues to climb higher and higher up the rankings. With 13 points against Boston University on Dec. 1, the senior not only scored her 1,200th career point, but she also moved into sole possession of ninth place. She is currently 26 points away from moving past Pam Odem in eighth place with 1,282 points.
• In addition to the all-time scoring list, Wright is also climbing in seven other categories. With 335 free throws, she is only five away from breaking the record Sabrina Johnson holds with 339. She is fifth with 198 steals and is only 26 thefts from moving up a spot. Her 404 assists are fourth most, and she would need 99 helpers to reach third. The Copiague, N.Y., native is also ranked fourth with 104 3-pointers, three away from No. 3. She is listed three other categories: 10th with 1,047 field goals attempted, fourth with 317 3-point field goals attempted, third with 416 free throws attempted.
Hart On Fire
• Freshman Coco Hart had one of the best games of her rookie campaign against UAB on Dec. 18. The Memphis, Tenn., native came off the bench and recorded her first-career, double-figure scoring contest with 12 points. She was 6-of-7 from the field, and she chipped in three boards in 16 minutes of action.
Four Players Score In Double Figures
• For the first time this season, St. John's had four players score in double figures in the same contest. Against UAB, Kia Wright led the team with 15 points, while Monique McLean and Sky Lindsay added 13 each. Coco Hart rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12. The Red Storm came close to having five players in double figures, as Tiina Sten just missed out with nine points.
