QUEENS, N.Y. - Three St. John's women's basketball players scored in double figures, but that wasn't enough to match up with No. 11 Baylor, as the Red Storm lost 81-58 on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
With the loss the Red Storm's record drops to 8-4, while Baylor's improves to 9-1 on the season.
"Baylor is an excellent team," coach Kim Barnes Arico said. "I thought at times we played well, and at times they were better at what we wanted to do. They are a quality program and it was a good game to get us ready for the BIG EAST."
The seniors paced the way for the Red Storm offense in the game today, as Kia Wright (3-of-11) and Tiina Sten (6-of-8) tied for the team high with 13 points. Monique McLean (4-of-15) rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11 points, which marked the 10th game this season she has scored 10 points or more.
In addition to tallying her third-consecutive double-figure scoring game, Wright became the St. John's all-time free throw leader with 341 thanks to a 6-for-6 effort at the line.
The Red Storm did not have an answer for the Baylor offense, which opened the game strong and continued to build momentum throughout. The Lady Bears shot 58.6 percent in the first half on 17-for-29 shooting, and concluded the game connecting on 52.6 percent of its shots. Despite shooting 39.4 in the first half and going into half time only down by 10 points, the Red Storm only hit 30.0 percent in the final stanza. The Lady Bears pressured the Red Storm, not allowing many shots to get off uncontested.
Down 32-20 with 7:41 left in the first half, St. John's cut the deficit in half thanks to consecutive 3-pointers by Kelly McManmon and Sten. After Baylor scored nine unanswered points, the Red Storm responded by closing out on an 8-3 run to come within 10 points of the lead, 44-34.
St. John's could not cut the lead down any more in the second half and only hit 9-of-30 from the field. The Red Storm didn't have many second chance efforts as Baylor came away with 25 boards, while the Red Storm grabbed only 12 in the frame.
The Red Storm will look to get back onto the winning track when it wraps up non-conference action against Morgan State on Dec. 30. The game is slated to start at 2 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
