Fencing Goes Undefeated At Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. - At Brandeis University the men's and women's fencing teams competed in the Gosman Athletic Center for the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday December 1. All members of the team had strong performances, leading to an undefeated weekend for the St. John's Red Storm, who finished second in the nation at last year's NCAA Tournament.
The men went undefeated this weekend, picking up victories over Brandeis (18-9) and Boston College (18-9), Brown (20-7), MIT (20-7) and Yale (17-10).
The sabre team, including senior Luther Clement, sophomore Torian Brown and freshmen Luis Perla and Charles Worsham, went on to do extremely well as the squad swept Brown 9-0, defeated Yale 8-1, topped Brandeis and Boston College 7-2 and rounded out with a 5-4 win over MIT.
Senior Henry Kennard and sophomores Alexis Landreville and Brendan Meyers took down Brandeis 7-2, Brown 5-4, MIT 9-0, and Yale 5-4 in the foil division.
Juniors Stan Vaksman and Mykhaylo Mokretsov of the epee team fell to Brandeis and Yale 4-5, but defeated Boston College, Brown and MIT all by 6-3 scores.
The women went undefeated as well this weekend, picking up victories over Brandeis (19-8), Boston College (20-7), Brown (17-10), Cornell (17-10), MIT (18-9) and Yale (15-12).
The women's sabre team including junior Ela Gray, sophomore Shawanda Plummer, and freshmen Tanya Dainoski and Martyna Wieczorek defeated Brandeis, Boston College, Brown, Cornell and MIT all by 6-3 scores, and added a 5-4 win over Yale.
The women's foil team beat Brandeis, Boston College and MIT by 6-3 scores, and defeated Brown, Cornell and Yale, all 5-4. Competing in this event for the St. John's women were seniors Monika Golebiewski and Katia Larchanka, as well as sophomore Jenai Mapp Watson.
Senior Reka Szele and Tanya Novakovska competed in the epee for the Red Storm and notched 7-2 wins against Brandeis and Boston College, and 6-3 victories against Brown, Cornell, MIT, and a 5-4 win over Yale.
The Red Storm fencing team goes on to Richmond, Va., from December 7-9 for the NAC (Division I) Olympic Trials.
