WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - With 1:03 remaining in the game, Kia Wright hit a layup to tie the score, 59-59, but the comeback fell short as Hartford held on for the 64-62 win over St. John's on Friday night at Chase Arena.
Both teams battled each other from start to finish, but it came down to the final minute of the game. Hartford got the ball back and St. John's fouled with 39 seconds left. Danielle Hood converted both attempts. After Wright hit a free throw to put the Red Storm within one, two more free throws by Courtney Gomez put the Hawks up by three with 17 seconds left. Sky Lindsay pulled St. John's within one off a jumper with three seconds on the clock. After Hartford missed a free throw, St. John's had a chance to tie or win it with two seconds, but time ran out and the shot couldn't get off
Two players posted double-doubles in the contest. Monique McLean led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Joy McCorvey had a 12-point, 10-rebound game.
Wright rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Red Storm with a 12-point outing.
St. John's (6-2) had to come from behind most of the second half but the game was close throughout, as Hartford never led by more than nine points. The score was tied six times, and the lead changed hands on seven occasions, all of which came in the first half.
Coming out of the locker room down by three, St. John's got on the board first in the second frame thanks to a McCorvey layup. The teams went back and forth with baskets until Hartford went on a 10-2 run to go ahead by nine, 47-38, at the 13:30 mark. A five-minute scoring drought ensued for the Hawks and the Red Storm capitalized by cutting the deficit down to three, 47-44.
Hartford (7-2) eventually jumped ahead by seven, 57-50, with 3:18 remaining, but St. John's got back into the game thanks to a Wright 3-pointer and a layup by McLean. After MaryLynne Schaefer hit two free throws, Kelly McManmon nailed a jumper to bring the team within two at the 1:31 mark of the second half.
Both team's offense matched up well from the start, as St. John's shot 40.0 percent and Hartford averaged 37.5. The difference in the game was the trips to the free throw line, as the Red Storm was 5-for-7 and the Hawks were 18-of-24.
The Red Storm will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Maine on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.
