Red Storm Fencing Takes Second At NCAA Championships

After four days of competition, the Red Storm fencing team takes second place, with 176 points, at the NCAA Championships at Drew University.
With five Top 5 finishes, the women compiled 94 points, while the men accounted for 82 to put the Red Storm seven points behind third place Columbia/Barnard.
Penn State won the championships with 194 points.
Taking home individual silver medals for the Red Storm is women's captain Monika Golebiewski and men's co-captain Benjamin Bratton.
On Saturday, Bratton advanced to the gold medal bout after defeating Dwight Smith of Columbia University in the semifinals. He was defeated by Slava Zingerman from Wayne State. Also competing in epee was sophomore Stan Vaksman. He took seventh place overall.
Bratton finished with 19 total victories and 106 touches scored.
In the men's foil, senior Henry Kennard finished sixth and newcomer Alexis Landreville took 16th place overall.
Meanwhile, in men's sabre sophomore Luther Clement took fifth place overall, while freshman Torian Brown finished in 18th place.
With 19 victories of her own, Golebiewski also finished with a 82.6 winning percentage in the women's foil. Doris Willette of Penn State defeated Golebiewski 15-10 in the final bout. Katia Larchanka finished 11th in the event with 101 touches scored overall.
Finishing back-to-back in the women's sabre,Dagmara Wozniak and Olga Ovtchinnikova totaled 16 victories a person. Wozniak finished fifthwith 97 touches scored and Ovtchinnikova finished 6th with 92.
In the women's epee, Reka Szele took home a bronze medal as she finished with 17 victories and 102 touches scored. Freshman Tanya Novakovska also finished in the Top 5 with 15 victoriesand 99 touches scored.
Altogether the Red Storm finished with eigth Top 6 performances.
