St. John??' Women Take Second At Metropolitan Championships

With three first place and six runner-up finishes, and a team total of 137 points, the St. John???s track and field team returned home as the Metropolitan Championship silver medalists, Saturday afternoon at Rutgers University.
Senior Maxcine Foster came away with her third event win of the outdoor season and her second in the 400 meter dash as she placed first with a time of 55.25. Foster has already qualified for the 400m with a time of 54:06, but her Metropolitan Champion sprint earned her both a BIG EAST and ECAC qualification time.
Foster defeated Rutgers??? Natasha Norville who finished second with a time of 56.66. Also placing in the Top 8 for the Red Storm was senior Thalene King with a fifth place time of 57.65 and freshman Asia Nettles with a seventh place time of 58.57.
Fellow senior Tetee Kuyateh also took home a gold medal in the hammer throw with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying throw of 53.64 meters. Kuyateh is .51 meters away from an NCAA Regional distance. Also placing for the Red Storm in the hammer was senior Kesheila Reid with a seventh place throw of 40.86 meters.
Also finishing as a Metropolitan Champion was the Red Storm 100 meter relay squad who finished with a time of 47.35 earning 10 points for St. John???s.
Sophomore Phobay Kutu-Akoi took home two individual silver medals from the Championships with second place times in both the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints. In the 100 meter dash, Kutu-Akoi placed behind Jacqueline Todd from Rutgers and was followed by Red Storm senior Alecia Sewell with a time of 12.10, earning BIG EAST and ECAC standards. Sewell finished third with a BIG EAST time of 12.25. Sophomore Paula Rennalls also earned a point for the Red Storm with an eighth place time of 12.51.
In the 200m, the Red Storm took both silver and bronze as Kutu-Akoi and King finished second and third, respectively. Kutu-Akoi finished at 25.10, while King finished at 25.25 for a combined 14 points. Rennalls earned two more points for St. John???s with a time of 25.38, and a seventh place finish.
Also earning silver medals on the track were Asia Davy and the 400 meter relay team. Davy finished close behind Avonie Parchment from Rutgers with a BIG EAST time of 1:04.08 for the silver. With a time of 3:51.32, the 400 meter relay team qualified for both BIG EAST and ECAC competition both of which will take place in May.
Rounding out the St. John???s individual silver medalists are Kuyateh and Venisa Clarke. Kuyateh finished second in the shot put with a BIG EAST and ECAC throw of 13.88 meters. Reid, Abbie David and Dominique Eason followed with fourth, nine and twelfth place finishes, respectively.
Clarke led the Red Storm in the high jump with a BIG EAST distance of 1.65 meters. She was .05 meters behind the first place jumper, Kerstin Greene, a junior from Fordham.
The Red Storm also earned three additional medals as Jodey Johnson, Fayanne Francis and Reid finished third in their respective events.
Johnson competed in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:51.57, Francis finished third in the long jump with a distance of 5.91 meters and Reid took home bronze in the discus throw with a distance of 42.29 meters, earning BIG EAST and ECAC qualification. Francis??? 5.91 meter mark is just .09 meters away from an NCAA Regional qualifier.
Johnson also competed in the 5,000 meter run, adding one point to the Red Storm???s total.
The Red Storm left New Jersey with 26 Top 10 finishes, 18 Top Five finishes and 14 individual medalists.

Up next, the Red Storm will travel to Franklin Field in Philadelphia for the Penn Relays. The Relays will be a three-day event from April 26-28.
