Kuyateh Qualifies For NCAA Regionals At Yale Springtime Invitational

After competing at the Penn Relays, senior Tetee Kuyateh made her weekend complete as she closed out April with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw in the hammer event at the Yale Springtime Invitational on April 29.
As a team, the Red Storm earned three first-place finishes at the one-day event.
Kuyateh finished first in the event with her career-best throw of 54.47 meters. Kuyateh???s throw was 4.47 meters better than the runner up, St. John???s alum and assistant coach Blessing Egwu. Egwu holds the No. 1 spot on the Red Storm???s Outdoor Top 15 leader board for the hammer with a throw of 59.92 meters last spring. Kuyateh???s throw places her at eighth in the all-time hammer leader list as she moves above LaTanya Brown (Class of 1997).
The senior is the second Red Storm track and field member to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships which will take place from May 25-26 in Gainseville, Fla. Senior Maxcine Foster qualified in the 400 meter dash at the Miami Elite Invitational earlier this month.
Kuyateh also competed in the discus throw finishing fourth with a distance of 39.59 meters. Senior Keshiela Reid placed second in the event with a BIG EAST and ECAC distance of 45.67 meters.
Dominique Eason also competed in the hammer throw, finishing eighth behind Kuyateh with a throw of 39.37 meters.
Freshman Fayanne Francis and sophomore Venisa Clarke-Lee were also event winners at the Yale Invitational. Francis continues to make waves as she qualifies for both ECAC and BIG EAST competition in the women???s long jump with a distance of 5.90 meters. Her jump is just .10 meters away from and NCAA qualifier. Kellie Brown finished fourth behind Francis with a distance of 5.34 meters, while Geraldine Brevil finished 15th with a distance of 4.16 meters.
Francis also competed in the triple jump event where she placed third with a distance of 11.18 meters.
Clarke-Lee finished first in the high jump competition with a BIG EAST score of 1.65 meters. The sophomore defeated competitors from NJIT, Army and Essex CC who fell just .05 meters short of her first place mark.
In track events, Jodey Johnson finished second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:44.21, four seconds behind event winner Brittany Burns from Marist.
The Red Storm had a tremendous showing in the women???s 200 meter dash as four competitors finished in the top 8. Phobay Kutu-Akoi placed second with an ECAC and BIG EAST time of 24.85, while ThaleneKing and Jennifer Lewis finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 25.21 and 25.37. Asia Nettles placed seventh for the Red Storm with a time of 25.82 and Paula Rennalls finished out the sprint for St. John???s at 26.25.
Briana Drexler competed in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.03, finishing 18th.
In the 100 meter dash, Rennalls led the Red Storm with an eighth place time of 12.75. Jackie Penne finished 22nd with a time of 14.98.
Up next the Red Storm will travel to Storrs, Conn., to compete at the BIG EAST Championships, hosted by University of Connecticut on May 4-6.
