Head coach Ed Blankmeyer was named the 2007 Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced this week. Blankmeyer led the Red Storm to a third consecutive 40-win season and doubled up on BIG EAST and Northeast Regional Coach of the Year awards for the second time in three seasons.
St. John's turned an 0-7 start into the program's 30th NCAA Tournament appearance, the eighth most in college baseball. Blankmeyer oversaw a school record eight players earn All-BIG EAST honors and led the Red Storm to a share of the 2007 BIG EAST regular season title. The team was ranked as high as No. 23 in Baseball America's national rankings and received votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and ESPN/USA Today final polls.
Blankmeyer closed the 2007 season with 398 career victories, all of which have come in his 12 seasons of work at St. John's. He will enter his 13th season in 2008 just two wins shy of the 400 mark and looking for a fourth straight 40-win season. Prior to the 2005 campaign, just one St. John's team had won 40 games in a single season, and since three straight teams have posted 40 or more wins.
