Fencing Has Strong Showing At NYU Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams competed in the annual NYU Invitational at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Saturday, Jan. 26. Four of the top five teams in the nation competed as No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 4 St. John's and No. 5 Columbia University were all in attendance.
The Red Storm participated in five of the six rounds at the invitational. In the first round, senior Luther Clement, sophomore Torian Brown, and freshman Charles Worsham defeated Wayne State 7-2 in the sabre. The men's foil set the tone for the squad when Alexis Landriville, Brendan Meyers and Hennry Kennard won their first match 9-0. Stan Vaksman and Mykhaylo Mokretsov also won 5-3 in the epee as the men finished 21-5 against Wayne State in the first round.
The women also defeated Wayne State as they used strong performances in the epee and foil to post an 18-5 record. Seniors Monika Golebiewski and Katia Larchanka and sophomore Jenai Mapp Watson combined to finish 8-1 in the foil, while senior Reka Szele, sophomore Schawanda Plummer and Tanya Novakowska finished 6-3 in the epee.
In round two, the men fell to Ohio State, but gained eight points for the Red Storm while the women earned seven points and also fell to the Buckeyes.
In the round three, the men defeated host NYU 18-9 and the women also defeated NYU by a 19-8 score.
Against Notre Dame, the Red Storm men and women fell 18-9 and 14-13, respectively, in the fourth round.
In the final round, the men defeated Columbia 19-8, while the women were defeated by a 19-8 score.
