QUEENS, N.Y. - After playing Louisville tough in the first half and coming within four at the break, the St. John's women's basketball team's offense was out-played in the final frame by the Cardinals, who picked up the 96-74 win on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
For the fifth time this season, four Red Storm (12-12, 3-8 BIG EAST) players reached double-figures in points. Kia Wright led the team with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor. Junior Monique McLean chipped in 14 points and edged closer to the 1,000 point plateau with 970 for her career. Freshman Sky Lindsay and junior Kelly McManmon added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Despite all the offensive production from St. John's, Louisville (17-7, 6-5 BIG EAST) also had four players tally double figures, however two of them combined for 51 points. Angel McCoughtry led all with 26 points, while Candyce Bingham was a close second with 25. Chauntise Wright and Patrika Barlow chipped in 18 and 11 points each.
In the first half, St. John's matched up well with the Cardinals, as the Red Storm shot 58.6 from the field and U of L hit 58.3. Louisville got the early lead and stayed in front the entire half, but the Red Storm was only down by six or less points in the first 10 minutes. With the score 37-31, St. John's tied the score for the first time by going on a 9-3 run. McManmon and McLean combined for all nine points during that stretch. The Cardinals eventually went up by seven, 51-44, at the 2:30 mark, but McLean got the lead down to four by hitting a 3-pointer.
Out of the locker room, STJ managed to come within one point of the Cardinals in the opening two minutes of the second half, but Louisville quickly pulled away and jumped ahead by double digits, 65-54, at 14:30. The Cardinals continued to build their lead and scored 16 unanswered points during that span. The Red Storm couldn't match the potent Louisville offense and did not have an answer to slow it, as the Cardinals took their largest lead of 25 points with 41 seconds to go, 96-71.
The Red Storm will look to snap its three-game losing streak when it travels to Providence on Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
