St. John's Women's Tennis Beats Columbia 4-3

QUEENS, N.Y. - For the first time in head coach Alison Davidson 's career at St. John's - both as a player and as a coach - the Red Storm has defeated its local rival Columbia. St. John's escaped its dual match Friday night with a 4-3 victory and the team's first win of the spring season. The Red Storm improves to 1-3, while Columbia falls to 3-3 on the season.
A win at the No. 1 spot in the doubles portion of the match by the team of graduate student Allison Adamski and senior Maria Zivcicova was not enough for the Red Storm to take the doubles point. The Lions clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
Zivcicova and Adamski won points for the Red Storm in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. The Lions also picked up two wins of their own at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots, but freshman Jenny Yonkus defeated Columbia's Lauren Shearer, 6-3, 6-1 for her first collegiate victory and the match was all square at 3-3.
It all came down to the No. 4 spot. Freshman Emily Barnett one the first set of the matchup with the Lions' Carling Donovan 6-2, only to fall in the second set by the same score. The deciding set was won by Barnett 6-3, and the Red Storm had its first win of the spring.
The St. John's women's tennis team returns to the court on Sunday, Feb. 17 for its first BIG EAST matchup. The Red Storm will square off against the DePaul Blue Demons at the Alley Pond Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
