QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a strong offensive showing against Providence and picked up the 73-63 victory on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Led by Monique McLean's 23 points, St. John's shot 48.2 from the field including a 50.0 percent performance in the final frame. McLean, who was 8-of-13, scored 15 points in the second half and just fell seven points shy of hitting 1,000 points for her career. Senior Kia Wright turned in another strong performance with 16 points and tied Joy McCorvey for the team high with six rebounds. Tiina Sten rounded out the double-figure scoring adding 12.
The game was close from the start with neither team taking more than a one-point lead. Providence eventually jumped in front, 16-12, when Kendria Jones scored on consecutive jumpers. McLean countered by running uncontested through the lane for an easy layup, then Recee Mitchell converted two free throws to tie the score at 16.
After Shantee Darrian scored to put PC back in front, St. John's went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-18 lead. Wright and Sten each hit a 3-point basket during that scoring stretch. The Red Storm took its largest lead of the half with 16 seconds to go when Wright stole the ball and converted the layup on the fast break, 35-23.
The Friars came out strong in the second half and scored eight unanswered points to come within six, 35-29. That didn't last long as the Red Storm went up by double digits on two quick shots, 39-29. After both teams traded baskets, Providence mounted another rally, working its way back in front thanks to a 15-4 run, 49-48. Kelly McManmon countered with a 3-pointer from the baseline to put the Red Storm back in front, but PC's Darrian tied it with two shots at the charity stripe.
A back and forth affair ensued until the Red Storm offense surged and scored 12 straight points to secure the lead it would never relinquish.
The Red Storm will continue its road trip when it travels to Storrs, Conn. to face No. 2/1 Connecticut on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 4:26 p.m.
