QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams held a clinic today in Montgoris Dining Hall to increase student awareness of the sport. The team taught their fellow students how to fence, showed video highlights of previous tournaments and provided an example of how a top collegiate fencing practice is conducted.
Seniors and All-Americans, Luther Clement and Monika Golebiewski were in charge of the clinic with help from Reka Szele, Katia Larchanka and Bernard Rencher of Academic Support for Student Athletes. Clement helped answer questions from students, while Golebiewski and Larchanka performed a mock bout to exemplify how the foil works. In the second demonstration, Clement introduced Rencher to show how the epee worked in a bout against Szele. The bout was intense for the first timer, (Rencher) in his epee suit and the crowd was delighted with his efforts. Rencher won the bout 5-4.
Next up for the Red Storm will be the Penn State Invitational hosted at University Park, Pa. on Saturday.
