Win And STJ Is In
• All the St. John's women's basketball team has to do to clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament is win against Cincinnati. The team would improve to six conference victories on the season and no one would be able to catch up to the Red Storm in the standings. The appearance would be the fifth straight for STJ.
Last Time Out
• St. John's (14-13, 5-9 BIG EAST) is coming off a 73-45 win over Seton Hall on Tuesday night at Carnesecca Arena. With the race to the conference tournament so close and the Pirates one win behind the Red Storm in the standings before the game, STJ edged closer to a berth with a strong offensive showing. Three players scored in double figures for St. John's, as it out-shot SHU 46.4 to 30.9. Recee Mitchell and Monique McLean led the way with 16 points each. The Red Storm also had a strong showing on the boards, grabbing 23 more than the Pirates (50 to 27) while posting its second highest total of the season.
The Series With Cincinnati
• Saturday's contest between the Bearcats (11-15, 2-12 BIG EAST) and the Red Storm marks the third meeting all-time between the schools. St. John's has won every contest with Cincinnati. The teams have played each other close, as the games have been decided by eight points or less. The series started during Cincinnati's inaugural season in the BIG EAST, 2005-06, when the conference expanded to 16 teams.
Monique McLean Reaches 1,000 Points
• On Feb. 26 against Seton Hall, McLean became the 16th player in St. John's history to score 1,000 points. The junior, who only needed one point to reach the milestone, did not waste any time as she ran uncontested through the lane to score the first basket of the game. She joins fellow teammate Kia Wright and seven other players on the list who accomplished the feat in their third year playing. With 16 points in the contest she finished the game with 1,015 points to rank 15th in the all-time scoring list.
Recee In The Zone Against SHU
• Mitchell had the best offensive game of her short career at STJ, setting a new career high with 16 points against Seton Hall on Feb. 26. The total breaks her previous record of 15 she scored against Boston University on Dec. 17, 2006. The sophomore, who only saw 15 minutes of action in the contest, tallied all of her points in the second half and finished the game 6-of-9 for a 66.6 average. The Tyler, Texas, native just fell shy of recording her first-career double-double with a nine-board performance.
What A Joy
• In her sophomore campaign, Joy McCorvey has already established herself as the team's top rebounder. Starting and playing in all 27 contests, she leads the way with a 5.9 rebound per game average. She has posted four double-digit rebounding games this season - a team high - and had a strong performance against SHU on Feb. 26 tying her season high with 11 boards.
On Deck
• The St. John's women's basketball team will return home to conclude its regular-season campaign when it hosts Notre Dame on Monday. The game is designated as senior day, as the Red Storm bids farewell to Tiina Sten and Wright.
